Shaylee expected Jack to propose to her on their fourth anniversary. They had met midway through college and, while she was ready for commitment, Jack felt as if all was going too well to worry about trivial semantics. Still, he had promised that their anniversary would be a special occasion. Secretly, she hoped for a proposal at the fancy restaurant he’d picked out. She anticipated their new beginning to start with a two carat princess cut diamond and not an Ouija board. Instead, Jack cancelled their reservations and asked Shay to come with him to Redgrave. Maybe it’s part of the surprise, she thought, going along with the change of plans and not bothering to question the quirky prop. Always know where you are. Redgrave, an abandoned mountain town in the middle of nowhere, could be a romantic place to start a life together, she told herself. Wedged between two highway intersections, the tiny town wasn’t what it used to be. Sadly, it was wiped off the map as the world built up around it. The place had mystery, which was sort of romantic. With no real explanation, rumors had spread about the town and its desolate condition. Shay, having grown up in Escape, Colorado a couple hours north, knew the dark legends of the tiny town. The most predominate was that of the ‘Midnight Man;’ a grim reaper of sorts who was said to live there. Like all grim reapers, Midnight Man did not like losing a soul he could have claimed. Many who visited Redgrave went only to face the Midnight Man. It was said that if you faced him, you could also talk to deceased loved ones. Be warned, though, legend said: He could take you with him.
